Description

This course will equip undergraduate Information Systems students with the basic skills to conduct researches in the field of Information Systems. The course aims to introduce the required techniques for conducting a research, implementing systems, writing technical reports and the skills for presenting the work for audiences. This course will particularly focus on topics which are related to the field of information systems. The course will also provide guidance to the students in selecting their projects, understanding the research process as well as the tools needed to support implementing the system and writing its documentation. The course discusses other issues including research methods that are normally used in researches such as experiments, survey, interview and simulations, understanding the importance of literature review, preparing visual presentations and other ethical issues such as plagiarism.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply mathematical, computing and organizational knowledge learned in the previous courses.
  • Plan to use proper methodologies and specialist tools and techniques to specify, design, analyse, implement and verify systems.
  • Select the suitable project which fulfils his/her ambitions.
  • Acquire new knowledge and understanding through critical reading of research material.
  • Appreciate the value of a scientific papers and its purpose.
  • Gain the basic skills needed for reading and summarizing scientific papers.
  • Prepare and present ideas using visual presentation tools for audience.
  • Gain experience in technical writing and oral presentation.
  • Ability to work in groups to do the proposed task(s).
  • Acquire a foundation in project management.

Final grades will be determined based on the following components:

Late Submission

The penalty for late submission without sufficient cause is 5% points per working day up to the seventh day in which 0% will be awarded.
